Scouts Bushcraft & Tomahawks

Developing Skills, Confidence and Adventure Through Scouting

Welcome to Scouts Bushcraft & Tomahawks, a practical resource for Scouts, Scout leaders and instructors interested in developing bushcraft skills, outdoor confidence and safe tomahawk activities.

Our aim is to provide useful bushcraft activities, tomahawk throwing resources, lesson plans, training guides and safety information that can be used to support adventurous activities within Scouting.

From learning traditional bushcraft skills and working with natural materials to introducing supervised tomahawk activities, the resources on this website are designed to help leaders plan engaging, practical and educational sessions for tomahawk throwing, Visit our Bushcraft Page.

Our Tomahawk goal is simple:

Making More Time for Practical Training

One of the main goals of this website is to make better use of the time available during a tomahawk instructor training course.

When a full training day is required to provide seven hours of supervised practical experience on a throwing range, spending a significant part of that day working through PowerPoint presentations and classroom-based theory can reduce the time available for hands-on learning.

By moving much of the theory, background information and knowledge assessment online, participants can complete this part of their learning before attending the practical course.

This creates an opportunity for the training day to focus on what really needs to be done in person:

  • Setting up and checking a throwing range
  • Equipment inspection
  • Safety procedures
  • Instructor demonstrations
  • Throwing technique
  • Supervised practice
  • Managing the throwing line
  • Running activities and games
  • Dealing with practical situations
  • Developing instructor confidence
  • Demonstrating practical competence

The result is a training day that can be focused almost entirely on practical experience.

Rather than spending valuable range time sitting through presentations, participants arrive with the supporting knowledge already completed and can spend the day learning by doing.

Our aim is to make this approach an option for course providers — helping them deliver a full seven-hour practical training day while still providing the theory and knowledge required to support competent instruction.

Learn the theory online.
Develop the skills on the range.
Complete the training with practical experience.
